A Strap-On Harness Guide

A strap-on harness, for those of you new to the concept, is a garment you wear around your hips and thighs that supports a dildo. The dildo is used for penetrative sex (both vagina and anus) and you can also perform a blowjob on it too. A strap-on can be used for both same-sex and heterosexual sex. Basically a strap-on harness gives you a penis that you can use in any way a biological penis is used. The motions while using a strap-on will stimulate the clitoris, making you feel really hot and sexy, so orgasm can be achieved while wearing one. The right strap-on should fit securely, be comfortable and feel right while using. Here are the varieties of options available and how they might be the perfect fit for you.

Important Parts

A strap-on is more than just straps. There are different components that make it work. Some use just straps in different configurations while some use a combination of straps and a wearable brief like bottom. Others can be pulled on just like underwear. Buckles on the straps are used to adjust fit. The O-ring is in the front part of the harness and comes in different sizes and materials. It’s where you put the dildo through and keeps it in place. O-rings are often metal but can be rubber, most can be removed to change sizes, and some are fixed. Changing sizes of your O-ring is important if you use different size dildos. The right size O-ring provides the most secure fit. Many of the brief style harnesses have rubber 0-rings that have some stretch to them making it easier to use with different sized dildos. You can also find a Vac-u-lock base where the dildo is attached by clicking it into the strap-on, not pulling it through an O-ring. The vac-u-lock system usually keeps the dildo on a firmer base and prevents it from spinning around. It can be difficult to use sometimes and you’re usually limited to only using the dildo made to go with the harness. An O-ring gives you more freedom of variety. Some harnesses will also have a slot for a bullet vibe. The last important part is the dildo, more on that later.

Types Of Harnesses

A strapped harness will come in two configurations: two-strap and three-strap. The two-strap, or G-string, has a strap the goes around the waist and another between the butt cheeks. These are often very inexpensive and touted as easy beginner models. Unfortunately, some don’t find the center strap to be very comfortable as they can rub the wrong way. Sometimes they aren’t very secure either, causing the dildo to flap around more or even fall out. The center strap can have opening to provide access or to add a dildo, vibrator or butt plug for the wearer. The three-strap harness has two straps that attach to the waistband and go around the thighs. This is usually a more secure and comfortable fit. It also leaves more access to the wearer’s genitals so they can enjoy other play or self-stimulation while wearing the harness. Some three-strap harness can be converted to two-strap. Lastly, the brief style harness has a stretchy cloth body that pulls on like underwear. This can be a better option if the strap versions tend to chafe or dig into your skin. The dildo is put through a pocket that contains an O-ring. This pocket can provide an extra layer of fabric between the wearer and the dildo. Some really like this as the dildo against sweaty skin can sometimes irritate.

Types Of Materials

Harnesses can come in leather, latex, PVC, spandex, cotton, nylon… just about anything. Pick materials that you know will not irritate your skin as it is going to fit snugly to your body while you are moving and perspiring. Some people prefer the sexy feel of leather or latex while other like the machine washable convenience of cloth. The brief style harness can often be thrown in the washing machine making cleanup so much easier. Harnesses can be buckled on with plastic or metal clasps, velcro and metal D-rings. Basic harnesses usually just use D-rings to adjust sizing. D-rings are great for easy adjustments, quicker than buckles, but they can slowly loosen. Some harnesses have different combinations of d-rings, buckles and Velcro. Find the one that fits snugly and comfortably while adjusting size at a level of ease that you find acceptable.

The Dildo

Choosing the right dildo is just as important as choosing the right harness. Choose a good quality body safe harness compatible dildo with a base to keep it in the harness. A dildo with attached testicles will work; it just depends on the size of your balls. Ones that are too small will not stay in securely. Finding the right dildo/harness combination is what you’re looking for. The most comfortable and best fitting harness with the wrong dildo won’t be much fun. Ideally you want the dildo to be firmly in place so you don’t have to keep holding or adjusting it.

Other Options

Strapless dildos have two ends; one of which is used internally by the wearer, and the other is the dildo shaped end. The idea is that by holding it in place inside you can still use the dildo like you would with a harness. The only problem is that not everyone is strong enough to hold one in and worrying about it falling out can be too distracting. There is a way around this. It will work in a strap-on harness! Put the dildo part of it through the O-ring then insert the other end while you’re wearing the harness. You get the combination of extra stimulation and the reassurance it won’t fall out. You can try a thigh harness if wearing a full harness is not an option or you just want to try something different. A thigh harness straps a dildo, often attached, to your thigh.

Pick What’s Best For You

Picking the right harness is all about considering exactly what you need. Think about how it’s going to be used, will this be only for vaginal penetration or will this be used for pegging. Pegging (anal penetration with a strap-on dildo) can necessitate a more secure harness. The size of your dildo is important so you can pick the right size O-ring or you can choose sets of sizes to accommodate whatever strikes your fancy. Your level of experience will have much to do with dildo size so don’t start too big. Start small and build up. Think about how easily you want it to be cleaned and how easy it is to put on/take off. The materials you choose should be things you find comfortable. You can even buy a vegan harness. You may even want to have different ones to have options depending on what you’re in the mood for. Do some research, maybe even make an in-store trip to see what they really look and feel like. A strap-on harness can add a whole new dimension to sexy playtime.
