Introducing Sex Toys - The Dildo

Woman with Vibrator

The difference between a vibrator and a dildo is, just as one of the words implies, vibration. A vibrator is any sex toy that uses vibration for stimulation and can come in a variety of shapes. A dildo doesn’t vibrate and is penis or phallic shaped for penetration. A dildo can have a pocket to insert a bullet vibe to convert it into a vibrator. Dildos shapes may not vary as much a vibrator but there are still lots of options out there. Here is an overview to help you pick one out that works for you. Have one that works for everything or have a variety to suit your needs.

Phallic shape is subject to interpretation

Merriam-Webster defines a dildo as “An object resembling a penis used for sexual stimulation.” Dildos can come in a variety of phallic shapes. Some are exquisitely detailed and realistic in shape. There are almost as many varieties in life like dildos as there are real life penises. They come in different lengths, different widths, and different textures. You can find shorter more slender ones, bigger and wider ones, a thickly flanged head or a slim one, balls attached or ball free. There are even dildos that have detailed veins on the shaft to add more texture. You can pick the color that suits your taste since you can find them in a variety of skin tones and some wacky colors too. You can also make a cast of someone’s penis for a homemade custom-made dildo. This can be tricky, and a little messy, but if all works out right you’ll have a duplicate of the penis you know and love. If realistic is not what you’re looking for, there are shapes with no detail at all just simple cylinders. There are others that still look somewhat like a penis but have more artistic shapes and textures designed not to replicate an actual penis but to enhance pleasure with spirals, nubs and swirls. While dildos can be used for any kind of insertion, you can get dildos specifically shaped and designed for anal play.

Straight, natural curve or G-spot curve

Phallic shaped dildos are often molded with the curve most penises have in nature; a soft curve as it nears the head. This shape can be found in realistic looking dildos and in stylized dildos. There are also realistic and stylized dildos that are perfectly straight. Some dildos have a more pronounced curve at the end. This puts it in the right shape to better stimulate the g-spot. A specific g-spot toy is not always required to hit the g-spot but some people may find it necessary to hit it at just the right angle for the best stimulation. G-spot dildos are usually less realistic looking although they can have a head like shape on it. G-spot toys can come in longer styles or with an end that looks like a handle. This is to help find that perfect spot without having to bend and stretch too much to get there. There are P-spot dildos too, specifically designed for anal use and curved to hit the prostate. This is similar to the G-spot and can be highly pleasurable when stimulated. Many of the realistic shaped dildos I described will come with suction cup bases. This will secure it for hands free fun.

Strap-on specific and packers

Some dildos are specifically shaped for strap-on harness use. You can still use one without a harness but not all dildos are the right shape for harness use. You need a flanged base or a good set of balls to keep a dildo firmly in place while worn with a harness. Another type of dildo is the packer. Female to male transgender men who have not fully transitioned, although people who cross dress as men or role-play use this too, use these. Soft packers are not designed for penetration but are softer realistic versions of a flaccid penis. Used in a packing strap, jock strap or jockey shorts, they give the wearer the look and feel of a real penis. Harder packing dildos that are more rigid or have a wire to switch from flaccid to an erect position can be purchased for sex.

Many materials to choose from

Materials range from the inexpensive to the pricey, from the synthetic to the natural. Most beginners will opt for cheaper jelly dildos since they’re experimenting and not too concerned with long-term use. Jelly dildos and PVC are hard to clean and can leach harmful phthalates so it’s highly recommend covering them with a condom when using. Once you’ve decided on the shape and style that suites you upgrade to a better quality dildo, you’ll be happy you did. Medical grade silicone, medical grade stainless steel, high quality aluminum, glass, stone, and high quality sealed wood and ceramic are all good body-safe options. Pick from a reputable company and do some online research if you’re not sure of the material used in a toy. Some companies have been saying their product is made of silicone but it’s not the body safe medical grade kind. Materials like Cyberskin and Softskin can make dildos feel more realistic but they can be very difficult to clean, especially Softskin which seems to attract every bit of lint to it like a magnet, and can melt or leach chemicals if not cared for or stored properly. Take care with the type of lube you use as some dildos are not compatible with all lubes. Some can break down and ruin your dildo, not something you want to have happen with an expensive toy.

Double your pleasure, double your fun

There are double ended dildos for double penetration or to add someone else to the party. Double dildos have a dildo at each end and come straight, curved or flexible. The ends are usually penis shaped but can come in other shapes. Some flexible ones are wired to keep their shape when bent. Others are curved and specially shaped for simultaneous vaginal and anal penetrations, with one end usually being shorter than the other. There are also double dildos that are specifically designed for one end to be inserted and used like a hands free strap-on but without the harness. The inserted half is shaped to fit better anatomically than just a phallic shaped end.

Other varieties, the artsy to the unusual

Some dildos are more “out of the box” in their design concept. There are some exquisitely beautiful glass dildos out there in lovely shapes and colors. On the more bizarre side, you can find dildos shaped like comic book characters, vegetables, zombies, vampires, dragons, werewolves, and tentacles. I’m sure that’s only the tip of the iceberg. If you can mold it, it’s been made into a dildo.
